My Bio

Fish or have fished for most things UK plus Arctic Catfish in Norway, Carp spotting in Kyoto and Steelheads in Lake Mead, Nevada. Carp fished since 1977 on what used to be Lord Byron's Estate. Barbel fishing since 1980s on Dane and Severn. More recently focussed on Ouse, Nidd, Derwent, and Trent. A dabble away are the Swale, Ure and Wharfe; slightly further to the Ribble and Dove and more distantly the Teme, Severn and Wye. Sadly the Hull is no longer a viable specimen Barbel fishery after the damage the seals did over a season and half following Spring 2009......

Yorkshire river Barbel PBs are:
  • Derwent 11lb 5oz (smallest 1.5 oz one cold January evening on maggot!)
  • Hull 12lb 8oz (River Record)
  • Nidd 10lb 2oz (After 12 years of trying)
  • Ouse 12lb 3oz (One time River Record)
  • Rye (so far barbel blanked but caught some magnificent Grayling)
  • Swale 11lb 8oz (Part of a five fish catch including two doubles in mid-February)
  • Ure 9lb 10oz
  • Wharfe 10lb 4oz
Other river Barbel are:
  • Dane 8lb 12oz
  • Dove (zip - after six visits - must do better!!)
  • Ribble (zip - I must actually get around to fishing this for the first time!!)
  • Severn 9lb 12oz (on a evening session above Shrewsbury with 6 other nines)
  • Sow (Caught all sorts but no Barbel)
  • Teme (One day I will fish this river)
  • Trent 12b 8oz
Other freshwater species:
  • Bullhead (Rivers Hull, Derwent and Rye contain quite large ones!)
  • Chub 8lb 2oz (Eclipsed 7lb 12oz and previous 6lb 10oz, one other at 7lb 1oz)
  • Common Carp 32lb 8oz (Patshull Park)
  • Mirror Carp 34lb 2oz (Motorway)
  • Leather Carp 26lb 12oz (Motorway)
  • Catfish (13lb Motorway)
  • Crucian Carp 4lb 2oz (a complete surprise - never over 1lb 8oz when purposely fished for)
  • Eel (I must admit I don't get on with these but have caught 100s, best a 2lb 8oz fish from the Ouse)
  • Grayling 2lb 8oz  (River Rye)
  • Gudgeon (millions!.... but none larger than 3oz)
  • Perch 3lb 3oz
  • Pike 19lb 12oz (One of those winter mornings I will do something about this)
  • Roach 2lb 2oz (Manchester Reservoir)
  • Rudd 2lb 1oz (Horsehoe Lake)
  • Rudd-Bream Hybrid (A 4lb 12ox specimen gave a decent account even on Barbel gear)
  • Ruffe (a seriously large 3oz one from the Derwent - plenty in the Ouse system)
  • River Bream 9lb 2oz (River Derwent)
  • Silver Bream 3lb 4oz (in my youth when the record was 4lb+)
  • Tench 7lb 2oz
  • Zander 13lb 8oz (River Trent)
